Concept ship art from legendary artist John Berkey

I know I've already posted this but I started doing the weekly header and Mr. John Berkey must have one. It should be a smooth ride from here on up!

This guy is a legend and this work is STILL way ahead of its time. I love the loose portrayal of complexity in the work.

More hard core spaceship art from John RIGHT HERE!

The last starfighter (1984)

The last starfighter had some ambitious computer generated spaceship art scenes for its time. I think the design of the ship still holds up and the model would make the front page on just about any modeling forum, even today.

Somehow, the recruitment of soldiers and pilots through video games doesn't seem so far fetched today... That must have been somewhat of a novel concept back in the early eighties when the script was being developed.

I was amazed at how well this sequence of the Gunstar ship looped. The breaks in the loops is from the 24 frames per second to 29.97 conversion or the 3:2 pull down. I think?

There is a rumor of a remake of this classic sci-fi film. It's also on HD DVD now.

Conceptships humor

A little brake from the insane art and artists featured here on concept ships as of late with some sci-fi spaceship humor.

This zombie George Jetson vector illustration comes from my good friend Rich Barry. Rich and I graduated the same year from Platt college tech. He is a master of the Illustrator to Toon Boom to Flash work flow. Check out some of his animations at Right-Hemisphere laboratory.

Hahahahahaha... The starch ship "plate-o-fries" by Rick Wawiernia and Ivy Hill.

Here's something I made a while back for CG Society's Lucas vs. Jackson theme.

Thanks for supporting CONCEPTSHIPS. More tight concept ship art and animations on the way... Stay tuned!

Close encounters of the third kind (1977)

I saw this in Communist Czechoslovakia with my dad when I was seven years old in 1978. For some reason, Close encounters was shown in selected theaters there and then while Star Wars was not. I wonder if Lucasfilm never licensed the film for European release or it was just that the Communist government was against showing a movie where "ordinary" good people rise up against tyrannical oppressive rule.

Either way, this is the movie that introduced me to quality special effects for film and showed me what was possible from American film producers/directors.

I love the use of lens flares in this movie... I use a lot of lens flares in my artwork because of Close encounters and Bladerunner.

This movie has been airing lately in high definition on HDnet.

Robotech sdf1

Is it me or... Will this piece of art be good forever.

I think entertainment concept wise, you'd be hard pressed to find anything more original than the Robotech franchise. More Robotech stuff on conceptships in the future for sure.
