what i wouldn't do for a tail rotor...
Its pretty cool tho, the idea of a larger CH54
I like the look, but wouldn't this only work with a double rotor set up?
Sheesh. This is why fantasy vehicles ought to be painted pink with sparkles, so nobody confuses them with something that people might build.
The point of a helicopter rotor is to produce lift by moving the blade forward through the air. An awful lot of air gets pushed downwards in this process, and if you put a big fat body in the way, you get huge amounts of drag. Not good. That's the reason why big helicopters are long rather than fat: the name of the game is minimizing the top view profile.
If you want to do a chunky aircraft, make it an ekranoplan, a wing-in-ground-effect vehicle. Google it, they're really cool.
I saw this some time ago and it's truly one of my favorite images, if only for the quality of the shader. Fantastic blend of hyper-real and nearly-illustrative, stylized metal surface. Just gorgeous. And the image on his portfolio link aint bad either!
