Star Wars concept ships from Ralph McQuarrie

Probably the most well known entertainment concept artist on this planet... Ralph McQuarrie. A big library of Ralph's work HERE.

The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film, a great book that explains in detail how Ralph McQuarrie worked closely with George Lucas and the modeling department to finalize the technical aspects of the designs.

interesting - as a kid i had some of these as posters on my wall. but i never saw the one in the header. it looks like parts from falcon and destroyer merged together.

The Star Wars book I had linked to goes in to good detail about how Ralph would revise the drawings over and over again based on Lucas' vision and the modeling department's suggestions.

I also think it mentions George Lucas kicking the cabin part off of that early practical model accidentally (pictured in the header image) and using it on the Millennium Falcon instead... If I remember right.

ow those images look great, that guy has talent, they should take those ideas and make a trilogy of movies out of them ! :)
I think one of the reasons the original trilogy designs rule compared to the prequels is that most of the concepts were done by just 2 people, Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston, by the time they got to Revenge of the Sith they had dozens of concept artists, too many cooks spoil the broth !!

i believe the ship in the header is the 'blockade runner'

The first image is an early version of the Millennium Falcon. The satellite dish and the cockpit were the only parts that carried over to the final version, and as has been mentioned, the body was converted into the Blockade Runner.

Here are some concept sketches detailing the evolution: http://web.archive.org/web/20000819043847/http://www.synicon.com.au/sw/mf/concep2.htm
