Anonymous,
Yeah... Not much... I gues...Thanks Jay!

Anonymous,
Yeah... Not much... I guess.

Christian,
Thanks so much... It means a lot. Still waiting for that dino/spaceship scene :)

matt and Derek,
Yeah... I guess I'll have to live with it. I made very little money from amazon to begin with but I guess it's the principle of it.

I still feel the way amazon terminated my account was very cold and I feel sorry for Coloradans who were making good money from selling their stuff. They've punished the cat for something the dog has done.

I'm a little worried about Google doing something similar though. Google must sell to Colorado as well and them pulling adsense would be way harder to swallow.

Thanks for all of your thoughts and info!conceptshipsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045488734527759793.post-26424036914952354372010-03-10T05:32:34.086-07:002010-03-10T05:32:34.086-07:00Don't blame Amazon. Blame Colorado.
Colorado ...Don't blame Amazon. Blame Colorado.

Colorado wants Amazon to collect and pay sales tax for purchases even though the sale "happens" in Amazon's tax-free home state. The requirement for collecting sales tax in any state is having "nexus" or "presence" in that state, and Colorado has taken the position that you - as an Amazon affiliate - are a paid employee and that your house is "Amazon's presence in the great state of colorado".

Which, of course, is patently ridiculous.

But the only way Amazon can remove itself from having to take on a nightmare of regulatory nonsense is to remove what Colorado considers to be "nexus"... in other words, to cut loose the Colorado-based affiliates. On the general principle that "the revenue you generate" via linking is not nearly as much as it would cost - both in terms of bureaucracy and in terms of lost sales through higher cost - of having to collect CO state tax.

So if you want to point to the "douchebags", point to your state representatives who made that happen.derekhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08125082926927402935noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045488734527759793.post-21880106724987175802010-03-10T04:55:13.266-07:002010-03-10T04:55:13.266-07:00Looks to me like most of the douchebaggery is on t...Looks to me like most of the douchebaggery is on the side of the Colorado legislature. Now let's say Amazon has a million customers in Colorado.

Under the new law, having a relationship with the associates means all customers in the state have to pay taxes on all their purchases (it's not the retailer who ends up paying).

So it was severing ties with 1,000 associates or forcing 1,000,000 customers to pay tax for out-of-state purchases.

What would you do differently?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3045488734527759793.post-65188089279725902332010-03-09T22:31:59.970-07:002010-03-09T22:31:59.970-07:00Oh man, that's terrible.
